The Will Eisner Spirit of Storytelling Awardcommemorates Will Eisner’s contributions to the comics medium and his imaginative storytelling skills as exemplified by his iconic comic character, The Spirit, and his many graphic novels and textbooks. 2017 marked the centennial of Will Eisner’s birth and this award is bestowed by Will Eisner Studios on the entry they deem best showcases that all-important “art of storytelling” in their stage presentation. The costuming and story are equally important. The Motion Picture Costumers, Local 705 is pleased to announce their second year presenting an award at WonderCon, and will be bestowing a beautiful custom trophy and a generous fabric Gift Certificate. Their technical award is seeking entries whose skillful execution, creativity, and attention to detail most highlights an imaginative adaptation of the source or a custom design. Local 705 is the Labor Union supplying movie and TV studio costume departments, costume rental houses, and made-to-order costume houses with artists and craftsmen, and are part of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, AFL-CIO.
Cosplayverse.com, a marketplace and online community offering high quality yet reasonably priced science fiction and fantasy leather accessories and other costume accoutrements, from boots to belts, banners, robes, and buckles, will be awarding a leather replica Jedi belt and matching leather pouches (valued at $400) to the entry they deem as best Re-creation from a Science Fiction source. The Saber Guild performance group will treat us to an elaborate show of storyline and choreographed light-saber battling, returning to our stage once again with a brand new Star Wars costumed show with ingredients from the latest film. Following them will be a mini-show by The Corps Dance Crew. Founded in 2013, The Corps Dance Crew is an amazing team bringing anime and comics to life through dance. Coupling cosplay, popular music, and varied dance styles, The Corps has explored favorite fandoms with a twist. They’ve performed at numerous conventions including WonderCon, Anime Expo, and San Diego Comic Con. This year they’re bringing their “DC Bombshells” set to the WonderCon Anaheim Masquerade stage.
